Search Engine Optimization & Keyword Density

Recently a client asked me to help him define exactly how many keywords should be placed in a page. He is an experienced copywriter and marketer, but the idea of writing for both human and machine (search engines) was just not something he was very comfortable doing without further direction.

The funny thing is that search engine optimization is a tricky thing … and although keyword density has something to do with the success of a page, it really is only a small part.

Not satisfied, I went on a ‘hunt’ to determine best practices – just in case someone could give me the ‘magic number’ – so I went to Google’s main man Matt Cutts himself. I figured if someone is going to know, HE would.

Here are a few best practices that are easy to apply to your pages if you use a user-friendly CMS like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, or others.

Keywords
Choose a keyword or keyword phrase and use it in the following areas:

  • Page Title
  • Header 1
    < h 1 >(Only one header 1 should be used per page)
  • Header 2
< h 2 >Use it here if it makes sense
  • Header 3
< h 3 >Use it here if it makes sense
  • General text content
  • Image Alt. Tags

Relative Keywords
Relative keywords are associated words such as ‘heel, shoelace, platform’ are related to the main keyword  “Shoe.” Use these liberally as long as they add value to the content and are easy for your visitors.

If you need a website that is easy-to-update or create pages, we supply these too. Our pricing is transparent and we provide website update and SEO training with each website.
